About Protected Landscape Area Little Carpathians

The Protected Landscape Area Little Carpathians (CHKO Malé Karpaty) covers approximately 167,000 acres in western Slovakia, forming part of the Carpathian Mountain chain. Extending from Bratislava in the south to Nové Mesto nad Váhom in the north, this area is characterized by rolling forested hills, vineyards, caves, and rich biodiversity. The region's geology includes limestone and dolomite formations, which have created numerous caves such as Driny, open for public tours. Ecologically, the Little Carpathians harbor mixed deciduous forests with species like beech, oak, and hornbeam, supporting wildlife including deer, wild boar, and birds like the Eurasian eagle-owl. The landscape is culturally significant with historical castles (e.g., Červený Kameň Castle), vineyards producing regional wines, and traditional rural villages scattered throughout. Visitors can explore an extensive network of well-marked hiking and biking trails that lead to lookout points offering panoramic views of the surrounding plains and the Danube River. The area also supports winter activities and educational nature trails. The combination of natural beauty, rich flora and fauna, and cultural heritage makes the Protected Landscape Area Little Carpathians a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families. Conservation efforts focus on preserving fragile ecosystems, including native plant species and cave habitats, while allowing sustainable tourism and recreation.
